Physical Description: Carpenter ants are larger than most ant species but physically look the same. They are segmented, with six legs, two antennae and an exoskeleton. Worker carpenter ants tend to have larger mandibles as well.
Carpenter ants pose no real health risks to humans, but are extremely destructive towards wood. While carpenter ants do not actually ingest wood products, they tunnel through them, creating nests inside the wood. This can cause structural damage to any type of building.
Signs of an Infestation
The major way to determine whether or not there is a carpenter ant infestation is by noticing sawdust generally around windows, porches or decks. The sawdust is called frass, and is left behind by the ants as they create tunnels inside the wood.
Removal
Pesticides are the main way to get rid of a carpenter ant infestation. Liquid poisons may be placed near the infested area for the ants to pick up and return to the colony or dust poisons can be injected into the areas where the ants are suspected of living.
