Physical Description: Earwigs have long, thin flat bodies with three segments and six legs. They have pincers are the backs of their bodies, which are longer in males than females. Earwigs also have 2 sets of wings near their upper body.
Many myths surround earwigs and their relationship with humans. Earwigs do not burrow into people's ears and lay eggs in their brain, nor are their pincers very dangerous to humans. Earwigs eat a number of burdensome insects but also are known to eat vegetables, fruits and foliage. A large infestation of earwigs can ruin a garden.
Signs of an Infestation
Earwigs tend to hide in areas that are damp, such as drain gutters, kitchens and bathrooms. They may enter your house if there is a large accumulation of plant matter or other organic material near the home. Earwigs are long and easily visible when present.
Removal
Several different insecticides can be used to remove an earwig infestation. Depending on where the problem is, different products are required, so it is recommended to consult with a pest control specialist in order to deal with the problem.
